Maintaining

Percent of Students Taking an Arts Course by Grade, 2023

What does this measure?

The number of students completing at least one arts course in grades K to 5, 6 to 8 and 9 to 12.

Why is this important?

Participating in arts allows students to explore different perspectives, reflect on emotions and foster creativity and innovation. Studies have shown that arts educational experiences can lead to more positive social and academic development outcomes among students. Taking arts courses in school allows students an opportunity to gain the benefits from arts experiences in an accessible way.

How is our region doing?

In 2023, 43.8% of K-5 students completed at least one arts course, followed by 22.6% of 6th-8th grade students and 16.8% of 9th-12th grade students. The percentage of students who completed at least one arts course was slightly higher in MetroWest than at the state across all grade levels. Since 2018, the percentage of students that completed has only slightly increased less than one percentage point for all grade levels in MetroWest.
